Heads Up: Star Wars Costumed Fan Appearances

We are extremely fortunate at Lucasfilm to have such devoted fans and we appreciate the excitement and enthusiasm of the worldwide Star Wars fan-organized clubs. In my role as head of fan relations, I am grateful that I get to work with you so frequently.

Now that we are part of a larger organization, I want to make sure you know that my role has not changed. I will still be your point of contact for all activities relating to Lucasfilm as well as The Walt Disney Company and our licensees or promotional partners.

As you can imagine, there is huge enthusiasm in the worldwide Disney offices and with our licensees and promotional partners to engage with Star Wars. Fans and fan organizations will continue to receive invitations to our Star Wars-themed events, such as baseball games, Star Wars Weekends, etc. And, as has been done in the past, there will be times when we call on your groups for what we call Featured Character Appearances.
In short, to help channel the genuine enthusiasm so that that it best benefits Star Wars and your groups, here is what we have communicated inside Disney, Lucasfilm, and to our licensees and promotional partners:
- All requests for Star Wars costumed characters will be coordinated through me, regardless of whether the source of each request is a licensee, a promotional partner, The Walt Disney Company or Lucasfilm.
- When specific costumed Star Wars characters are required by Disney, Lucasfilm, or licensees and promotional partners for Featured Character Appearances, they have been directed to treat any individual involved as project employees.

If you receive any request from an outside group for a commercial activity that is associated with Lucasfilm or Disney and have not heard from me first, please give me a call or send me an email.

Finally, please take note that we understand that your members participate in non-commercial, community and charity activities through your organizations, which are independent of us, and do not require contact with me. Except hoped-for reports for Bantha Tracks!

We appreciate everything that you do in your communities and for the Star Wars brand. Thank you again for all you do!
Mary Franklin

Open Legion Council Forums

A number of discussions and votes of the Legion Council can now be openly viewed by all members here.

The intention, as stated by the Legion Commanding Officer,

TB-101 Wrote:Within this section of the forum, members will find discussions relating to changes in our charter and protocols, and will be able to watch the process unfold from first post to final conclusion. It is our hope that this will help to educate our membership from the beginning as to why specific changes or alterations are made. It should also serve to increase communication among interested members, those who wish to contribute or who have questions, between yourselves and your unit commanders and second council seats.

You will be able to read these forums but not post. If you want anything raised then your Garrison CO (Sorbin) or XO (me) can pass it on.

Which discussions occur on this open forum and which on the still closed council forum I think it still being worked out. Either way you'll have some interesting reading.

RE: Legion News Blast - Meanders - 28-05-2014

Your "Legends" costumes are safe.

Reposted from the LCO's blog.

The Lucasfilm Story Group recently announced that all Expanded Universe novels, video games, and other materials are no longer officially Star Wars "canon." (http://tinyurl.com/LegendsAnnouncement) Elements from the stories that they have dubbed "Legends" may eventually prove to be part of the official timeline, but for now, the “official” fate of anything beyond The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, and the films is uncertain.

This uncertainty has understandably raised some concerns among current and prospective members of the 501st, because for years many of the costumes of the villains from these stories have been eligible for Legion membership.

The Legion Command Staff would like to make this clear: The reorganization of the Star Wars continuity will have no impact on the Legion’s costume roster, past, present, or future. The current Membership Team and Legion Command Staff would never consider retroactively removing characters from our lineup because of it.

Expanded Universe characters have had the support of Star Wars fandom for years, and they have all of the necessary references to bring them to life. Even if the continuity team at LFL changes the timeline, or if the coming films and television shows negate parts of our collective "history," these characters will still exist to us, the fans. Characters like Mara Jade, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Kir Kanos, Darth Revan, Delta Squad, Death Troopers, and countless others will always exist in the Star Wars body of work.

This is not a matter of only "grandfathering in" the particular members who have already been approved with these characters’ costumes. To be perfectly clear: Expanded Universe costumes will remain eligible for 501st approval now and in the future.

Likewise, if there are suitable visual references and the costume meets the high quality that the Legion has come to be known for, then new-to-the-Legion costumes from the Expanded Universe will still be eligible for inclusion in our Costume Reference Library. If there is reference material for a character, it is eligible —and will remain eligible— both for characters currently listed in the CRL and for others that may be constructed in the future.

The Expanded Universe characters that are being moved into the “Legends” category will always have a place in the 501st Legion, no matter what the Lucasfilm Story Group ultimately decides.

Yours in the Empire's service,

- The 501st Legion Command Staff
